Integrating CANS and EHR

Massachusetts has adopted the CANS program to improve the mental and physical health of children born in the state. The questionnaire presents significant opportunities for providers, but reporting requirements make it imperative that they adopt an EHR with CANS integration.

What Is CANS?

The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths in MA is a tool specifically designed to support children’s services for ages birth to four years old and adolescents from five through twenty year olds. CANS implementation in MA involves providing support for decision making, care planning, acquiring services, creating improvements and monitoring service outcomes.

Massachusetts has adopted the CANS program to improve the mental and physical health of children born in the state. The questionnaire presents significant opportunities for providers, but reporting requirements make it imperative that they adopt an EHR with CANS integration.

  1. Modeling: CANS implementation in MA includes the development of algorithms for levels of care that range from treatment foster care and residential services to community and more traditional outpatient care.
  2. Approaches: CANS gives care settings and tasks a rating to help care providers and partners know where to focus. Ratings can highlight strengths as well as what areas need to be addressed in the overall care plan.
  3. Outcome: Monitoring the outcome of efforts is simple in CANS, because the rating can be tracked over time and adjustments signify if areas have become strengths or if they need continued work. The model also breaks down other areas, such as noting problems or areas of poor function, or highlighting risky behaviors.
  4. Results and Proof: Across the U.S., CANS systems have demonstrated both validity and reliability. CANS can be audited and tracked, so the process can be used to make sure your patients are improving.

What Are The Benefits of EHR systems With CANS Integration?

Entering the CANS only once into your EHR system that is integrated with EOHHS eliminates duplicate data entry and keeps the assessment as data in your EHR. This allows your smart clinical forms and reports to pull that data as needed.
There are a few important considerations for using and achieving the child and adolescent needs and strengths advantages in MA:

  • The questionnaire and development plan must be completed by behavioral health providers.

  • These providers must use CANS as part of the initial assessment required for MassHealth members, and it should be continuously updated.
It can provide services and support for outpatient concerns, in-home therapy sessions and intensive care coordination.

  • Providers need to track their CANS data in an EHR if they wish to acquire proper fee-for-service compensation.

And for billing, there are a host of CANS requirements around auditing, reporting, analysis and more. However, since 2008, MassHealth has been paying mental health care providers at enhanced rates for services that are properly billed with multiple CPT codes when a CANS assessment is performed.
